FAQ ABOUT HUID
I’ve been hearing about HUID for some time. Can you explain it to me in simple terms? | What is HUID, and why should I care?

The Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number is a six-digit alphanumeric code consisting of numbers and letters. HUID will be given to every piece of gold jewellery at the time of hallmarking, and it is unique for every piece of jewellery. The jewellery is stamped with the unique number manually at the Assaying & Hallmarking centre.

HUID assures the purity and quality of hallmarked jewellery and ornaments. It helps to identify and avoid fake or substandard products. It enables you to lodge complaints or grievances online in case of any discrepancy or defect. And it also provides you with a digital record of your gold purchases for future reference.

How will I benefit from HUID? What makes it necessary?

Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) assigns a unique six-digit alphanumeric identity to each piece of jewellery, enabling easy traceability. This identification system is essential because it prioritizes the credibility, transparency, and purity of Hallmarked jewellery. HUID helps in monitoring malpractices and ensures consumer rights are protected.

HUID will help you to identify and avoid fake or substandard products. It enables you to lodge complaints or grievances online in case of any discrepancy or defect. It also provides a digital record of the purchases for future reference.

Is there any drawback in using HUID hallmarked jewellery?

If you want to verify the authenticity and purity of your ornament or jewellery, you have to go to the BIS website or BIS Care app. Essentially it is not a drawback but an additional layer of security on your jewellery which was not present before the introduction of HUID.

What is hallmarking? Can you explain how the hallmarking system works?

According to the Department of Consumer Affairs website, the hallmark consists of 3 symbols which give you some information. In this, the first symbol is the BIS logo, the second symbol indicates purity and fineness and the third symbol is the HUID. Before buying any piece of gold jewellery you have to check for these three symbols.

What is the difference between BIS Hallmark and HUID?

Both are issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards or BIS, the National standards body of India. BIS Hallmark is a certified symbol for the purity of the metal. It certifies that the purity of the jewellery acts per the standards set by BIS.

HUID is a unique identification number for every piece of jewellery. It provides information about the jeweller who got the jewellery hallmarked, their registration number, purity of the jewellery, type of jewellery as well as the details of the hallmarking centre which tested and hallmarked the jewellery. Using this information a common consumer can verify the article being purchased by matching it with the jewellery type as well as its purity as said by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution.

I bought some ornaments a while back which doesn’t have HUID. Should I exchange them immediately? Will the ornaments lose value if I don’t?

From 1st April 2023, the Government of India only allows selling HUID hallmarked gold jewellery in the country. In the future, the government wishes to account for all the gold jewellery in the country with a unique number like Aadhaar. Although it is not mandatory to convert all the current ornaments to HUID hallmarked jewellery as of now, it will be the standard of gold purity and authenticity going forward since it is a government-issued Unique Identification code. So, It is best to get it exchanged for HUID-hallmarked jewellery from BIS-certified jewellers like Jos Alukkas.

Can I exchange or sell my HUID hallmarked jewellery anywhere in India?

Yes, you can exchange or sell your HUID hallmarked jewellery anywhere in India as long as it has all five marks intact. Jos Alukkas provides exchange offers for exchanging your old non-HUID gold jewellery for new HUID-hallmarked jewellery. You can avail these offers at any Jos Alukkas showroom across India.

How do I benefit from HUID? Can you explain? | What will I gain by exchanging my current jewellery for HUID hallmarked jewellery?

HUID ensures the purity and authenticity of the gold jewellery you are purchasing and ensures transparency of the purchase. The HUID number is unique for each piece of jewellery sold in India. It is easy for the consumers to check their validity and purity or address their complaints regarding the gold’s purity and fineness. So, if you exchange your current non-HUID jewellery for HUID-hallmarked jewellery, it will ensure the purity of your jewellery and will provide a layer of security over the gold jewellery you hold. And it is also an opportunity to own newer, trendier and more fashionable jewellery with no additional cost.

HUID will help you to identify and avoid fake or substandard products. It enables you to lodge complaints or grievances online in case of any discrepancy or defect. It also provides a digital record of the purchases for future reference.

Will Jewellery without HUID lose its value when brought in for exchange?

Jewellery does not lose its value in exchange. You can exchange your current non-HUID gold jewellery for new HUID hallmarked jewellery. HUID is used to identify the authenticity and purity of gold jewellery using a unique alphanumeric ID.

If your jewellery is un-hallmarked, then you can either get it exchanged as new HUID-hallmarked jewellery or can get it hallmarked from a BIS-registered jeweller like Jos Alukkas.

What is the minimum quantity of gold that needs HUID hallmarking?

Gold Jewellery that weighs above 2 grams only needs HUID hallmarking.

Should I only buy or exchange 22-karat gold with HUID hallmarking?

No. All gold jewellery that is recognized by the Government of India and the BIS to hallmark and sell in India should also be hallmarked with HUID alphanumeric code, regardless of the karat. There are six different gold hallmarks that are allowed in India by the BIS. They are 14 carats, 18 carats, 20 carats, 22 carats, 23 carats, and 24 carats. Whatever the karat may be, if it is gold jewellery that comes under any of these six hallmark categories, it should be HUID-hallmarked.

Can I track my jewellery code online? | Can I check the HUID number online?

Yes. Anyone can check the authenticity of hallmarked jewellery by using the 'verify HUID' feature on the BIS Care App, according to the BIS website. This will help them to verify the purity and authenticity of gold jewellery from the Government of India.

Will HUID affect my privacy or security in any way?

No. There are no privacy or security issues with HUID at all. It is a safe and secure system implemented by the Government of India to protect the rights of consumers. The hallmarking is automated with no human interference.

Will it be valid if I own gold with the BIS hallmark alone? (What will happen if I own BIS Hallmarked Jewellery alone?)

Both BIS hallmark and HUID are issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards or BIS, the National Standards body of India. The Government of India only allows selling HUID hallmarked gold jewellery in the country since 1st April 2023. The government wishes to account for all the gold jewellery sold and purchased in the country with a unique number like Aadhaar in the future. Although your BIS hallmarked jewellery is not invalid as of now, it will be the standard of gold purity and authenticity going forward. It is best to get it exchanged for HUID-hallmarked jewellery from BIS-certified jewellers like Jos Alukkas.

How to verify the authenticity of the HUID code?

To verify the authenticity of the HUID code, go to ‘BIS Care Application', click on ‘Verify HUID’ and enter the 6-digit alphanumeric code. You will get the relevant details including purity, weight, name of the jeweller, etc.

Where can I find the HUID number on the piece of jewellery?

It can be found along with the BIS Hallmark and purity of gold. There will be three markings on the jewellery. The first one will be the BIS hallmark, the second one will be the mark of gold purity, and the third 6-digit alphanumeric code will be HUID.

Will gold become more expensive under the new system?

There is no additional cost involved as jewellers are already charging for hallmarked jewellery. This system will not impact the price

Is it mandatory for all jewels including Silver?

No. HUID hallmarking is not mandatory for Silver jewels.

How can I report any complaint or grievance related to HUID hallmarking?

You can report any complaint or grievance related to HUID hallmarking using the BIS Care app or the BIS website. You need to provide your contact details, HUID code, invoice number, jeweller name or hallmarking centre name, date of purchase, nature of the complaint, and supporting documents or images. You can also call 011-23234223 (Extn. 8368) or email huid@bis.gov.in or hallmarking@bis.org.in for assistance.
